Sir,
I am directed by the Secretary of State for the Colonies to inform you that, subject to your being passed by the medical adviser of this Department as physically fit for service, he proposes to select you for probationary appointment as Assistant Apothecary and Analyst in the Government Civil Hospital, with salary at the rate of $1,800 a year to be raised to $2,400 as may be made permanent at the end of three years, subject to your being satisfactory.
The value of the dollar varies from time to time, at present about 2s. 1 1/2d., but you will receive an Exchange Allowance in addition to your salary. You will be furnished with bachelor quarters at the Hospital free of rent. We will be required, if so desired, to give security to the extent of $3,000 in respect of the pecuniary responsibility attaching to your office.
Your conduct has been good, he has applied himself to his studies with perseverance. He is a level-headed, self-reliant man, a gentleman in manner & habit, good in all outside qualities, & with accomplishments which will always ensure his occupying a good social position.

2. It is to be understood that your engagement is for not more than three years from the date of your arrival in the Colony; and that, if it is established to the satisfaction of the Governor that you are not qualified for efficient service there, the Governor, subject to the confirmation of the Secretary of State, will have full power to cancel your appointment at any time within the said three years without giving you any further compensation than a passage back to England, which will be granted only if the Governor is satisfied that you have, by your good conduct, deserved it.
3. It is also to be understood that your services will be available for whatever duties the Governor may consider desirable to employ you, and that it will be within his discretion to station you wherever he may consider that your presence will be most useful.
4. It will be necessary for you to express your acceptance of the conditions stated in the 2nd and 3rd paragraphs of this letter before your appointment is confirmed.
